Engineering and FCC filingsPrequal for NCE translators

What the check does

  • Under 47 CFR 73.512(c), Alaska is the only place new Class D applications are accepted, and there they may be filed at any time. Transmitter power for a Class D station is capped at 10 watts (73.506(a)(1)). The FCC would also rather place it on a commercial channel when a usable one exists (73.512(a)(1)), so the check covers every one of the 100 FM channels.
  • The FCC will not accept a Class D application whose contours overlap any other station's 60 dBu service contour. That means its 40 dBu contour on a co-channel, its 54 dBu contour on a first-adjacent channel, and, at two or three channels removed, its 100 dBu contour (73.509(b)). Pending applications, translators and LPFM stations all count.
  • Your contours are drawn with the F(50,10) curves from the FCC, switching to F(50,50) within 16 km (73.509(c)). Any channel fails when your site lies inside the 60 dBu contour of another station, or when your own contour reaches that contour on the line joining the two sites.
  • Overlap entirely over water is not counted (73.509(e)). This check does not model that, so a channel ruled out close to the coast could still be usable.

Based on the FCC rules as of October 14, 2026 (eCFR) and its station records. A planning aid; you need a full engineering study before filing. The FCC did not make this tool.
