Is your renewal near?
Nexus Broadcast handles the renewal for you: it prepares and files the application, the EEO report and the public notice, and answers any FCC questions that follow.
Where these dates come from
- Every eight years, licenses lapse at 3 a.m., station local time, on the date assigned to its state (47 CFR 73.1020). The same schedule applies to LPTV, TV translators, and FM boosters and translators (74.15).
- Count back four full calendar months from expiration: the renewal is due on the first day of that month (73.3539(a)). If that day lands on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the following business day.
- Petitions to deny must be in by close of business on the first day of the final full calendar month of the term (73.3584(f)), and the business-day rule applies here too. For a late-filed renewal, the window is instead 90 days after the FCC's acceptance notice.
- Six on-air announcements spread across four weeks are required of AM, FM and TV full-service stations, Class A, LPFM stations, and LPTV stations that originate programming. FM and TV translators and the remaining LPTV stations give notice online instead (73.3580).
- Regardless of the expiration date, a license ends automatically once a station has been off the air for 12 straight months (73.1020(c)).
Based on the FCC rules in the eCFR. The FCC may assign a specific station its own date, so confirm the date on your license and in any public notice the FCC issues. Not an FCC product.
